Taboo Party
Mastering the Art of Description
What is Taboo Party?
Taboo Party is the ultimate verbal challenge designed for parties, work breaks, and high-energy social gatherings. At its core, the game is about communication and constraint. You must lead your team to guess a secret target word—but there's a catch: you cannot use any of the five most obvious descriptive words associated with that target.
This game forces you to think creatively, use synonyms effectively, and build a unique mental connection with your teammates. It's fast, loud, and one of the best ways to break the ice in any setting.
Full Game Walkthrough
The Setup
Select Taboo Party in the Arena. This game is most fun with two teams of 2 or more people. Choose a category that everyone is comfortable with—'General' is great for a mixed crowd. Use the 'Rounds' slider to decide how many turns each team gets. Typically, 3 to 5 rounds provide a solid 15-minute game.
Team Initialization
Before starting, name your teams to add some personality to the competition. The first team's 'Clue-Giver' takes the device. Everyone else on their team should be ready to guess, while the opposing team acts as the 'Judge' to watch for any forbidden words.
The Clue-Giving Heat
Press 'Start Turn' to begin the 30-second timer. A target word appears in large text at the top. Below it are the five forbidden words. You must describe the target word to your teammates. If you say a forbidden word, you must press 'Pass' immediately.
Judging and Passing
The opposing team should peek over your shoulder (or watch the shared screen) to ensure no 'Taboos' are broken. If the Clue-Giver uses a forbidden word, or part of the target word itself, they lose the point for that card and must skip to the next one.
Final Tally
Once the timer hits zero, your turn is over. The app tracks your correct guesses. Teams alternate until all rounds are complete. The team with the most total points is declared the Taboo Champion.
Scoring Rules
- • Successful Guess: +1 Point
- • Skipped Word: 0 Points
- • Taboo Violation: 0 Points (Card is Void)
- • Winner: Highest cumulative score after all rounds.
Pro Describing Tips
- • Use Opposites: Instead of describing what it is, describe what it's the opposite of.
- • Rhyme Time: While you can't say 'it rhymes with...', you can lead people there with other clues.
- • Think of Context: Describe a famous movie or place where the target word is used.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use gestures?
In the classic spirit of Taboo, only verbal clues are allowed! Gestures, 'sounds like', or drawing in the air are technically against the house rules.
What happens if we tie?
If the game ends in a tie, we suggest a single 'Sudden Death' round where each team gets 15 seconds to score as many points as possible!
